Today I bring you one of the most popular dishes in Chinese restaurants, the “Honey Chicken”. It is a very easy dish to prepare and you will see that if you dare to make it at home it will be just like in the Chinese restaurant.
The chicken is cut into bite-size pieces, marinated and coated in batter, and then fried with a golden color and a crunchy texture on the outside. To finish it is sautéed covering all the chicken pieces with a thin layer of our honey sauce. I assure you that its flavor will be the favorite of many people.

Ingredients for 4 people
- 500 grams of chicken breast or breast of chicken
- 100 g. of wheat flour (for breading)
- 100 g. cornstarch (for breading)
- 1 tablespoon of light soy sauce
- 1 egg
- A dash of Chinese rice wine
- White pepper
- Vegetable oil
For the sauce:
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 4 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in 2 tablespoons water
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 small piece of ginger
┃Step 1: Marinate the chicken
a) Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces. Put in a bowl and add light soy sauce, white pepper, egg and optionally Chinese rice wine. Mix everything together very well (today I am using the thigh but you can also use the breast).
b) Cover and leave in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes.
┃Step 2: Prepare the ingredients
a) Chop the garlic and ginger.
b) Dissolve the cornstarch with water in a small bowl and set aside for later.
┃Step 3: Batter the chicken.
a) In a bowl or Ziplock bag, mix the all-purpose wheat flour with the cornstarch very well. This mixture will make the batter lighter and crispier.
b) Coat the chicken very well with the flour and before frying remove all the excess.
Step 4: Frying the chicken (Double fry)
a) Fry the chicken in plenty of vegetable oil over medium heat, about 160 ºC for approximately 5 minutes, depending on the size. Remove to a rack and let rest for a couple of minutes.
b) For the second frying, fry the chicken over high heat, about 180 ºC until well browned and crispy.
┃Step 5: Prepare the sauce.
a) In a frying pan put some of the oil and sauté the garlic and ginger until it starts to smell good.
b) Add the water, honey, light soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, salt and stir well until everything is dissolved.
c) Gradually add the cornstarch dissolved in water and continue stirring until the sauce thickens.
Step 6: Sauté and plate.
Add the fried chicken, sauté quickly until the sauce coats the chicken well. Serve immediately. Top with some sesame seeds (optional) and it’s ready to eat.
You can adjust the flavor of the sauce to taste, more sweet, sour or salty. By increasing or decreasing the amount of sugar, rice vinegar and soy sauce.
I used a mixture of half wheat flour and half cornstarch. You can use only wheat flour, but with the mixture you get a crunchier texture.
You can eat the “Honey Chicken” alone or with freshly cooked white rice.
