Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup butter softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup milk
  • cups diced apples
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts optional
  • Topping
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line a 9x5-inch loaf pan with parchment.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In a large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until creamy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  • Add sour cream and milk, mix until smooth.
  • Add dry ingredients to wet, stirring just until combined.
  • Fold in apples and nuts.
  • Pour half the batter into the pan. Add half the topping. Repeat with remaining batter and topping.
  • Bake 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Cool 10 minutes in pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor balance.
For a glaze, whisk ½ cup powdered sugar with 1 tablespoon milk and drizzle over cooled bread.
Store tightly wrapped at room temperature up to 3 days or in the fridge up to 5.
