Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

Tonight will be my 3rd time making this recipe. It's so good, and the sauce is to die for

Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort food that brings back fond memories of home cooked meals. This easy crockpot version transforms the dish into a convenient, mess-free weeknight dinner without sacrificing any of the flavor. Ground beef is formed into hearty patties packed with Worcestershire sauce, garlic, onion and parsley for tons of savory depth. A quick sear locks in moisture before braising for hours in an incredible rich onion gravy until fall-apart tender. The results are always mouthwateringly delicious.

This crockpot salisbury steak recipe is simple to throw together but tastes like you spent all day cooking. It starts with mixing 2 pounds of ground beef with eggs, panko breadcrumbs and seasonings to form 8 hearty patties. They get browned in a skillet with butter and oil to caramelize the outside while keeping the interior juicy and tender. Then the patties nestle into the slow cooker and get smothered in savory gravy loaded with sauteed onions, beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and Lipton onion soup mix. Everything simmers away for 3-4 hours on high or 5-6 hours on low, infusing with flavor. When ready to serve, a cornstarch slurry thickens the gravy into the perfect consistency to ladle over mashed potatoes. It’s total comfort food bliss!

What kind of ground beef should I use to make the Salisbury steak patties?

You can use 80/20 or 85/15 ground beef. Using ground beef with a higher fat content will help keep the patties moist as they cook.

Can I double or triple this crockpot Salisbury steak recipe?

Yes, you can easily double or triple this recipe if needed to serve more people. Just multiply all the ingredients as needed and use a larger slow cooker if making more than the original recipe amount.

How thick should I make the Salisbury steak patties?

Make the patties about 1 inch thick so they hold their shape well in the slow cooker. Using an 1/2 cup measuring cup to scoop and shape the patties ensures they are all a uniform thickness.

What can I serve with the Salisbury steaks?

These are delicious served over buttery mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. A side of vegetables like green beans or asparagus also pairs nicely.

Can I prepare the patties and gravy ahead of time?

Yes! You can brown the patties up to a day ahead. Prepare the gravy as well and refrigerate overnight. Then add both to the slow cooker as directed in the recipe instructions when ready to cook.

Tips for making delicious crockpot Salisbury steak

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for moist, flavorful patties. The higher fat content keeps the patties from drying out.
  • Make sure to brown the patties first before putting them in the slow cooker. Browning helps them hold their shape better.
  • Sauté the onions first before adding to the slow cooker for enhanced flavor.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce and ketchup to the gravy mixture – the tangy flavors really make the gravy pop.
  • Use Lipton onion soup mix for an extra savory flavor boost. The seasoning blend adds lots of rich, oniony flavor.
